Il 20 settembre 1934 nasceva a Roma Sophia Loren, al secolo Sofia Villani Scicolone.
Sophia Loren fu la prima donna a vincere l’oscar come miglior attrice in un film che non fosse di lingua inglese. Il prestigioso premio lo vinse attraverso la regia di un magnifico De Sica con la pellicola “La ciociara”, del 1960.
Figlia di Romilda Villani e Riccardo Scicolone, il padre riconobbe la figlia ma non sposò mai la madre, che per superare le ristrettezze economiche abbandonò Roma per tornare a Pozzuoli, la sua città natale.
Fu quindi lì che Sophia visse i difficili anni della seconda guerra mondiale. Negli anni ’50 tornò a Roma per partecipare ad alcuni concorsi di bellezza, tra cui Miss Italia: in quest’occasione venne creato un titolo ad hoc per la giovane donna, Miss Eleganza. Questi concorsi furono il trampolino di lancio per la carriera di Sophia: la donna venne notata infatti da molti produttori, e cominciò così la sua carriera cinematografica. Tuttavia, il padre non approvava la carriera della figlia, e tentò più volte di metterle i bastoni tra le ruote, denunciandolo addirittura per prostituzione.
L’attrice ebbe modo di recitare con i più grandi dell’epoca: Alberto Sordi, Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio De Sica non sono che alcuni dei nomi più celebri.
Regina del cinema italiano, la sua immagine andò sempre più confermandosi anche a livello internazionale, e la sua figura venne spesso accostata a quella delle celebri attrici hollywodiane come Marilyn Monroe e Audrey Hepburn.
Orgogliosa delle sue origini partenopee, l’attrice confermò in un’intervista di non essere italiana, bensì napoletana: un’altra cosa, secondo l’attrice italiana più famosa nel mondo.
